Magnum through its Licensees, is engaged in several projects internationally. These projects support several environmental initiatives.
One such project involves the processing of organic waste using Magnum's Advanced Pyrolysis System (APS) Technology (Patent pending). This technology is innovative, secure, efficient, non-polluting and proven to convert Organic Waste into marketable by-products such as Activated Carbon Black, Fuel Gas and Fuel Oil. This successfully addresses the problems associated with the safe and efficient disposal of Municipal Solid Waste, Used Tires, Wood bio-mass, Petro-chemical compounds, Plastic Waste and Coal as examples of organic waste material. The APS Technology is capable of handling and processing these types of organic waste without the risk of pollution or the need for landfill sites, while opening the door to revenue from the sale of marketable by-products.
Magnum is currently working with interested parties from Canada, USA, India, South East Asia, as well as South America.
Applications of the APS Technology
- APS Technology application for waste tire treatment:
Waste tires are a dominant market for the pyrolysis system. The major problem in this market is the quality of by-products produced. Traditional indirect-heat pyrolysis systems cannot completely process waste tires resulting in non-marketable by-products of carbon black and fuel oil. The APS technology can produce marketable quality by-products to meet the demands of industry.
The APS2000 can produce 3 kinds of by-products. They are steel, fuel oil, 300 mesh (N330 grade or better) quality carbon black. The percentage rate of the by-products is as follows:
• Steel: 8 ~ 12% depending on the type of tires
• Fuel oil: 40% ~ 50%, depending on the flash point
• 300 mesh high quality carbon black: 20% ~ 35%
- APS applications for waste plastic:
Plastic is a rich hydrocarbon product, the only concern is that it may contain PVCs. If the waste plastic material contains PVCs, the best method to treat it is by steam pyrolysis. In the processing of plastics, the only significant by-product is Fuel oil with only a small amount of carbon produced (depends on plastic type). It may be less than 2% and generally can be ignored.
The yield rate of fuel oil is about 30% ~ 70% depending on the plastic type.
The quantity of waste water depends on the amount of chlorine.
- APS application for MSW waste:
Municipal Solid Waste is a major problem for all cities. It has the potential to be an energy source. Currently, most MSW is land filled or sent to an incinerator. Both the landfill and incinerator solutions cause significant environmental problems. Significant amounts of toxic materials are buried under ground including waste generated from an incinerator. The public is aware of global warming issues and problems caused by CO2 emissions. The new generation of waste-to-energy systems for dealing with MSW are now being taken seriously by the public and the regulatory authorities responsible for the environment. Currently many countries are considering pyrolysis as a replacement for incineration and landfill options.
- APS application of agricultural biomass and animal waste:
Using the APS2000 technology biomass such as wood or agricultural waste can be processed to create saleable by-products such as activated carbon, bio oil and syngas. The APS technology avoids the creation and emission of toxins such as benzene, acrolein, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), formaldyhyde, dioxins, and furans created from the burning of such biomass.
